Garza 'tons better' after throwing session

CHICAGO –Chicago Cubs pitcher Matt Garza played catch on flat ground Saturday as the club reported continued progress on his sore right triceps.

“Feeling tons better … one day at a time,” Garza wrote on his Twitter account Saturday after he threw.

The next stage for Garza, who hasn’t pitched in a week, is to have a bullpen throwing session Monday, one day before the non-waiver trade deadline.

Garza, who has been out ever since suffering what was called a cramp in his last outing, was the center of a number of trade rumors as the deadline approached, but the arm soreness has cooled interest in the right-hander.

He still isn’t expected to pitch in a game until next weekend at the earliest when the Cubs are in Los Angeles to face the Dodgers. Coincidentally, the Dodgers have been mentioned often in possible deals for Garza or fellow Cubs pitcher Ryan Dempster.

“Everything is gradually progressing,” manager Dale Sveum said about Garza. “He’s doing much better and we’ll try to get him out there late next week but everything is going really well. It looks like right now, if I had to say, it should happen (by next weekend) but everything is just getting better each day.”

Another wrinkle in the recovery schedule is that Garza's wife is expected to enduce labor Tuesday. It will be the couple's fourth child.

"It’s up to them; they’re going to write down my road back," Garza said about the Cubs' traiing staff. "If it was up to me I would take the mound the day I throw (a bullpen session) but obviously that’s just me. They have done it before with other guys and they will get me back when they think I’m ready."
