CHICAGO -- The Chicago Cubs announced Tuesday morning that the well-documented tradeof catcher Geovany Soto to the Texas Rangers was finally official.

Soto was dealt along with cash considerations in exchange for Double-A right-hander Jake Brigham (5-5, 4.28 ERA) and either a player to be named later or return cash considerations.

Essentially, if the Cubs don’t end up talking a player to be named later, they will recoop some of the money they are sending the Rangers to pay for Soto’s salary.

Soto was pulled from Monday night’s game against the Pittsburgh Pirates and said his goodbyes in the dugout with handshakes and hugs. He was not available after the game for comment.

The move was not made official immediately because all trades involving cash considerations need approval from the Commissioner’s office. The Cubs are picking up an undisclosed chunk of what was left on Soto’s $4.3 million salary this season.

In another move from Monday night, Paul Maholm and Reed Johnson were traded to the Atlanta Braves for two pitchers, including highly-regarded right-hander Arodys Vizcaino, 21, who is out until next spring because of Tommy John surgery.
