The Cubs made it official as they selected the contract of Brooks Raley from Triple-A Iowa and put Matt Garza on the disabled list, retroactive to July 28, with a right elbow stress reaction.

The Cubs essentially announced the move this weekend, but waited until before Tuesday’s game to make it. Raley was set to start against the San Diego Padres and will make his major league debut.

Raley is a Texas native who was a sixth-round pick by the Cubs in the 2009 draft. He does not have an overpowering fastball but relies on location and changing speeds. His pitching style is similar to Cubs starter Travis Wood.

Raley, who will wear uniform No. 43, started the season at Double-A Tennessee before earning a promotion to Iowa. He was a combined 6-10 with a 3.58 ERA over 22 starts and was named the organization’s pitcher of the month in July.
