CINCINNATI -- The Chicago Cubs claimed left-handed reliever Alex Hinshaw off waivers from the San Diego Padres on Sunday.

The former 15th-round draft pick by the San Francisco Giants in 2005 was 1-1 with a 4.50 ERA with the Padres this season in 31 outings. He was first brought up to the major leagues on May 8 and was designated for assignment on Aug. 14.

Hinshaw is expected to join the Cubs on Monday at Milwaukee when a corresponding move on the active roster will be made. To get Hinshaw on the 40-man roster, Arodys Vizcaino was transferred to the 60-day disabled list.

Vizcaino was obtained on July 30 in a trade with the Atlanta Braves. He underwent Tommy John surgery during spring training this season and is expected to be ready to pitch again during spring training in 2013.
