Brett Jackson was not in the Chicago Cubs' lineup Tuesday against the Houston Astros, and he doesn’t figure to return to action until the team returns home for a 10-game homestand beginning Friday.
Also not in Tuesday’s lineup was Darwin Barney, who is getting a rest in the midst of his 126-game errorless streak, a record for a National League second baseman. Adrian Cardenas will start in place of Barney.
Jackson suffered a bruised right knee Friday night in Pittsburgh when he slammed into the center field fence after making a spectacular catch on a drive from Andrew McCutchen.
The Cubs’ medical staff told the rookie center fielder that if his foot was planted when he made contact with the wall, there was a good chance of having serious posterior cruciate ligament damage. Because his right foot was off the ground at the time of impact his injury was limited to a deep bruise.
Manager Dale Sveum said that if left-handed hitting Jackson returned to action on the road trip it would be Tuesday since the Cubs were facing a right-handed pitcher. The Astros are scheduled to start left-hander Fernando Abad on Wednesday.
The Cubs have a day off Thursday before they play host to the Pirates for three games beginning Friday at Wrigley Field.
The Cubs' complete lineup Tuesday against Astros right-hander Jordan Lyles:
David DeJesus, CF
Luis Valbuena, 3B
Anthony Rizzo, 1B
Alfonso Soriano, LF
Starlin Castro, SS
Steve Clevenger, C
Bryan LaHair, RF
Adrian Cardenas, 2B
Justin Germano, P
