DENVER -- Still in need of four victories to avoid the third 100-loss season in franchise history, the Chicago Cubs returned to their right-handed swinging lineup for the second consecutive night.
Dave Sappelt, Josh Vitters and Joe Mather were all starting again Wednesday as the Cubs faced a second consecutive Colorado Rockies left-handed pitcher.
Sappelt put a charge in things early, hitting a home run to lead off Tuesday’s game. The Cubs scored five times but couldn’t hold back the Rockies’ offense in a 10-5 defeat that was shortened to seven innings because of rain.
Former Cubs Tyler Colvin and DJ LeMahieu were back in the Rockies’ lineup to face their old team. The duo combined for five hits and three RBIs in Tuesday’s game.
Wednesday’s complete Cubs lineup against Rockies left-hander Drew Pomeranz:
Sappelt, RF
Darwin Barney, 2B
Anthony Rizzo, 1B
Alfonso Soriano, LF
Starlin Castro, SS
Welington Castillo, C
Vitters, 3B
Mather, CF
Jason Berken, P
