DENVER -- The Chicago Cubs will bring two more minor leaguers to Wrigley Field before the season ends.
Infielder Logan Watkins and right-hander Nick Struck were named the Cubs’ minor league player of the year and pitcher of the year respectively, and although they won’t be coming to Chicago to play, they will be honored before Monday night’s game against the Houston Astros.
Watkins, who led the Southern League with 93 runs, and Struck, who led with 14 victories, both played at Double-A Tennessee this season.
Watkins, a 21st-round pick in the 2008 draft, batted .281 with 20 doubles, 11 triples, nine home runs and 52 RBIs. The 23-year-old played 95 games at second base, 29 games at shortstop and 17 games in center field.
Struck, a 39th-round pick in the 2009 draft, was 14-10 3.18 ERA over 28 appearances (26 starts). After May 29 he was 10-5 with a 2.29 ERA in 18 appearances. The 22-year-old was the Cubs' minor league pitcher of the month in June when he went 4-1 with a 2.45 ERA over five starts.
