With yet another error-free game Thursday, Barney has now played 141 consecutive games at second base without making a miscue. He tied the single-season record set by the Detroit Tigers’ Placido Polanco set in 2007.
Barney already owns the all-time Cubs record for consecutive errorless games at second. Ryne Sandberg had a 123-game run from June 21, 1989 to May 17, 1990. David Eckstein had the previous NL record for consecutive errorless games by a second baseman in a single season at 113.
If Barney plays the remainder of the Cubs’ games this season, he could push the single-season mark to 147 games. His only error at second base this season came April 17 at Miami. He has now gone 1,148 1/3 innings since that miscue.
Barney’s biggest competition for a Gold Glove is Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips, who was won the honor the last two seasons and three times in the past four years. Managers and coaches vote for the Gold Glove Award.
