The Chicago Cubs' search for a new television color commentator will move on without Dan Plesac.

Plesac told ESPNChicago.com that he informed WGN executive producer Bob Vorwald on Friday that he was withdrawing his name from consideration and staying with the MLB Network, where Plesac has worked since it began in January 2009.

Plesac, a former Cubs pitcher, interviewed two weeks ago for the opening created when Bob Brenly left for the Arizona Diamondback last month. MLB Network allowed Plesac to talk to the Cubs despite having three years remaining on a four-year contract he signed last year.

Although Plesac didn't say why he withdrew his name, there are possibly two reasons. The Cubs can get out of their contract with WGN Television after 2014, and the MLB Network might have have enticed Plesac with a better deal.

A source said although the MLB Network allowed Plesac to interview, it didn't want to lose his presence on their programming.

Plesac met with WGN Television, Comcast SportsNet and Cubs president of business operations Crane Kenney during the interview process.

Plesac, 50, spent three seasons as a pre- and postgame analyst on CSN Chicago Cubs broadcasts before joining the MLB Network.

He pitched 18 years in the major leagues, including the 1993-94 seasons for the Cubs. Plesac still holds the Milwaukee Brewers' all-time record for appearances by a pitcher.

A source familiar with the search said a choice for a replacement is not imminent.
