CHICAGO -- Chicago Cubs general manager Jed Hoyer said Wednesday he’s received positive news from starting pitcher Matt Garza as he recovers from last season’s right elbow injury.

Garza was shut down by the Cubs in August. He was 5-7 with a 3.91 ERA in 18 starts. He recently began throwing again.

“It’s all been good so far,” Hoyer said. “He’s seems really happy. In some ways, I’m going to sort of rely on his moods and how he feels about it, and he’s been excited about his progress.”

Garza announced he first threw again on Twitter on Dec. 10 and wrote, “1st day throwing the baseball! Felt great, #keepitslow! Looking forward to day#2#GoCubsGo.” He also announced on Twitter he felt great after throwing for a second and third time in December.

When asked about Garza on Wednesday, Hoyer joked about Garza’s Twitter updates.

“You just got to follow him on Twitter,” Hoyer said while laughing.

The Cubs believe they will have a deeper starting rotation in 2013. Along with Garza, they also return Jeff Samardzija and Travis Wood from last season and have added Edwin Jackson, Scott Baker, Scott Feldman and Carlos Villanueva as starting options.
