MESA, Ariz. -- The Chicago Cubs trimmed their roster to 53 on Monday, sending out six players to various minor league destinations.

Pitchers Trey McNutt, Brooks Raley and Alberto Cabrera along with second baseman Logan Watkins were sent to Triple-A Iowa while pitcher Robert Whitenack was sent to Double-A Tennessee and pitcher Nick Struck was sent to minor league camp.

The Cubs indicated there would be more cut downs after split squad games in Las Vegas and Arizona this weekend. That's when highly touted prospects Jorge Soler and Javier Baez are expected to be sent out.

The Cubs take on the Arizona Diamondbacks in Cactus League play on Monday. Jeff Samardzija will start for the Cubs.
