After sitting for an entire contest for the first time in 269 games, Starlin Castro was back in the Chicago Cubs lineup on Wednesday. Manager Dale Sveum was hopeful that the young shortstop would find a groove at the plate after clearing his head on Tuesday.

“That’s what we’re hoping for, that was part of the day off,” Sveum said. “Hopefully he had an opportunity to kick back -- I didn’t need to pinch hit him or anything last night -- he just got to kick back and enjoy the day. So hopefully he gets back to being the player he is.”

After making the All-Star team the previous two seasons and never batting below .283 in his career, Castro was at .228/.264/.318 entering play on Wednesday and was struggling on defense as well with 14 errors, including seven in his last 11 games.

While Castro was back in the lineup, Alfonso Soriano was out, with the recently called up Brian Bogusevic taking his place in left field. Sveum said he wanted to sit him on Tuesday, but Soriano had solid numbers against starter Kyle Lohse, so Sveum decided to push the day off to Wednesday. Soriano is hitting a paltry .148/.145/.230 in his last 15 games and the normally strong power-hitter is slugging just .392 on the season.

Sveum also wanted to be sure Bogusevic was ready to go during their upcoming trip to AL ball parks.

“I wanted to get Bogusevic in there before we get to the west coast where he’ll probably play every day,” Sveum said. “You want to keep that bat going, the way he was swinging the bat at Triple-A, you don’t want him to sit too long.”

Sveum said Bogusevic would patrol left field for the Cubs while Soriano would slot into the DH spot when the Cubs wrap up their road trip in Seattle and Oakland.
