CHICAGO -- They're not exactly on pins and needles, but Chicago Cubs pitchers Travis Wood and Kevin Gregg will be watching their game against the Pittsburgh Pirates closely on Saturday afternoon as well as Major League Baseball’s All-Star selection show at 5:30 p.m. They’re the Cubs' best two hopes of making this year’s game.

“Of course you want to,” Gregg said Saturday morning of making the team. “Everyone plays this game to be an All-Star or win a World Series.”

Gregg is the longer shot of the two, considering he has just 14 saves on the year, tied for 11th in the National League. But his 1.59 ERA is first in the league among those with 10 or more saves, along with a 0.99 WHIP, good for fifth in the NL.

“I know what I did,” Gregg said. “My numbers are good, but I just don’t have the save totals. Just like Woody and wins.”

Wood is just 5-6 on the year, but his 2.69 ERA is ninth among pitchers with 10 or more starts. And he’s walked just 33 in 110 1/3 innings, making him the favorite among Cubs to be chosen.

Either way, Gregg, for one, is enjoying the moment.

“Since I was released twice in the last year?” he said laughing. “Yeah, for sure.”
