Rapid Reaction: Cubs 4, Diamondbacks 2

PHOENIX -- A quick look at the Chicago Cubs' 4-2 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday at Chase Field.

How it happened: Chris Rusin, who was summoned from Triple A-Iowa to pitch in place of the traded Matt Garza, pitched well, allowing only one hit through five innings. He left the game with two on and nobody out in the sixth inning and both runners came in to score. The Junior Lake show has been worth the price of admission. Leading off for the first time since his call up, Lake get four hits. He showed his versatility by laying down a bunt single, and one at-bat later he hit a monster home run into the left center field hinterlands. For good measure, Lake added another bunt single in the seventh and an RBI single in the ninth. Catcher Dioner Navarro hit his ninth home run of the season in the second inning. Navarro is averaging a home run in one of every 15 at-bats.

What it means: Rusin should get at least one more start after showing well on short notice Monday evening. Cubs players should brace for more moves by the front office. There are nine days left before the non-waiver trading deadline. Prime candidates to be moved next are closer Kevin Gregg and outfielder Nate Schierholtz.

Outside the box: Cub players were riveted to ESPN and the MLB network as they watched the coverage of the Ryan Braun media circus. … Count Navarro among those who will miss Garza. “He is one of those guys where you can’t stand him and you can’t live without him,” said Navarro, who was Garza’s personal catcher over the last month.

Up next: Cubs lefty Travis Wood (6-6, 2.79 ERA) faces Arizona’s ace, lefty Patrick Corbin (11-1, 2.35), in Game 2 of this four-game series.
