Here's a quick look at the Chicago Cubs' 12-1 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies on Thursday afternoon:

How it happened: Jeff Samardzija lasted just 3 1/3 innings as the Phillies scorched him for 11 hits and nine runs. After John Mayberry Jr. and Michael Martinez had run-scoring singles in the second, Darin Ruf hit a two-run home run in the third to give the Phillies a 4-0 lead. Nate Schierholtz hit his 15th home run of the season in the fourth but the Phillies responded with a six-run bottom of the inning. Carlos Ruiz, Chase Utley and Domonic Brown had run-scoring hits before Cody Asche belted his first home run of the season. John McDonald added a two-run home run in the eighth. The game was delayed 22 minutes due to rain in the seventh inning.

What it means: It was Samardzija's shortest start of the season and tied for the most runs he's given up. After Junior Lake misplayed a ball in left off the bat of Asche in the second inning, Samardzija seemed to fall apart. He was hit hard, leaving balls over the heart of the plate way too often. It's not his record (6-11) that should be of concern but his lack of consistency. Every time he looks to take a step forward, he's inevitably gone backwards.

Outside the box: Before the game J.C. Boscan joined the club from Triple-A Iowa for the ailing Dioner Navarro. If Boscan gets into a game he will be the 50th player to appear for the Cubs this season, three off the team record.

Next: The Cubs move on to St. Louis where they will start a three-game series on Friday. Left-hander Chris Rusin (1-1, 3.98) faces Lance Lynn (13-5, 3.78) in the opener.
