Here’s a quick look at the Cubs' 4-0 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday:

How it happened: Back-to-back doubles to lead off the fourth inning by Matt Carpenter and Carlos Beltran were all the offense the Cardinals would need as Joe Kelly and the bullpen shut the Cubs down. St. Louis added a run in the fifth when Starlin Castro fell asleep in the field after catching a popup in short left field, which allowed Jon Jay to tag up from third. Yadier Molina hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning while Kelly was taking care of his business on the mound. He gave up four hits and three walks over six innings, getting out of a bases-loaded jam in the third when Anthony Rizzo struck out and Nate Schierholtz grounded out to end the Cubs' biggest threat of the day.

What it means: Travis Wood continues to be a tough-luck loser as his record dropped to 7-10, though his ERA is just 3.13. On a day when the wind was blowing in and Kelly was on his game, it didn’t help when the Cubs gave St. Louis a run on Castro’s mental error.

Castro’s benching: After Castro's mistake in the field -- which allowed Jay to score -- Cubs manager Dale Sveum talked with Castro in the dugout and then pulled him from the game. It’s not the first mental error of the season or his career for Castro, who seems to make his most glaring mistakes at important times -– with runners on base.

What’s next: The rubber game of the series takes place on Sunday afternoon when Edwin Jackson (7-10, 5.05 ERA) takes on Adam Wainwright (13-7, 2.71).
