CHICAGO -- Chicago Cubs manager Dale Sveum and pitcher James Russell were ejected in the bottom of the seventh inning after arguing a check-swing, third-strike call on third baseman Donnie Murphy.

With two on and none out and the Cubs trailing the Cardinals 6-1, the right-handed Murphy appeared to check his swing in time, but home plate umpire Phil Cuzzi called him out without appealing to the first base umpire. That enraged Sveum.

"It wasn't questionable. It was easily the worst check swing call I've ever seen," Sveum said after the game. "That's why the other umpires are there. To give him help. He said he thought he got it right."

Murphy argued for a moment at home plate but Sveum and bench coach Jamie Quirk started yelling from the dugout, eventually getting Sveum ejected. He then came out and argued with Cuzzi near home plate continually pointing his finger towards the first base umpire, Chris Guccione. Eventually second base umpire Ron Kulpa came in to break up the argument.

Russell was also ejected, presumably for yelling from the dugout as well.

"I disagreed with him and automatically went in to look at the replay and it showed I didn't swing," Murphy said. "What are you going to do?

"I told him I flinched, he said I swung."
