How it happened: The Cardinals scored three times in the second and seventh innings as Jon Jay's three-run home run in the latter inning put the game away for St. Louis. The Cardinals got two unearned runs in the third inning when Junior Lake dropped a ball in center field hit by Kolten Wong. Two batters later Matt Carpenter drove in a pair with a single after Yadier Molina and Jay had back-to-back doubles earlier in the inning. The Cubs scored in the sixth on a two-out walk by David DeJesus and double by Lake.
What it means: The Cubs lost another home series, their fourth consecutive, and scored just one run in the final two games. Starlin Castro broke out of an 0-for-16 slump with a hit, but Anthony Rizzo went 0-for-4 and is 2-for-20 so far on the homestand. DeJesus is also slumping, seeing his batting average drop to .250. Lake brought his average back up over .300 with a three-hit day.
Outside the box: Dale Sveum and pitcher James Russell were ejected in the seventh inning after arguing a check-swing, third-strike call on Donnie Murphy. Replays showed Murphy probably didn’t swing, but home plate umpire Phil Cuzzi never asked first base umpire Chris Guccione for help. Sveum argued from the bench, and then the field, while Russell was tossed by third base umpire Tom Hallion.
