CHICAGO -- The Chicago Cubs selected the contract of right-handed, Korean reliever Chang-Yong Lim from Triple-A Iowa while designating Michael Bowden for assignment, the team announced on Wednesday.

Lim, 37, signed a two-year contract last winter and has been rehabbing from his second Tommy John surgery. He appeared in 21 minor league games this season, starting five. He had a 0.79 ERA in 11 relief appearances for Triple-A Iowa before being called up.

Lim is a 17-year overseas veteran, playing for both Korea and Japan before choosing to come to the Cubs. Since 2008, he’s saved 128 games with a 2.09 ERA for the Yakult Swallows.

“There were quite a few (major league) teams interested,” Lim said through an interpreter.

He said he chose the Cubs because he thought it was the best fit for his rehabbing situation and eventual promotion to the big leagues. Lim was asked what he knew of his new team.

“The curse,” he replied. “The 100 years.”

Bowden was 1-3 with a 4.30 ERA in 34 relief appearances for the Cubs this season.
