MILWAUKEE -- Here's a quick look at the Chicago Cubs' 4-3 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday:

How it happened: Pinch hitter Logan Schafer brought home the winning run on a suicide squeeze in the bottom of the ninth after the Brewers loaded the bases with no one out. Pitcher Justin Grimm didn't help himself as he made a critical error on a bunt earlier in the inning. Chicago got down 1-0 on a Carlos Gomez sacrifice fly in the second inning but eventually took a short-lived lead with a three-run seventh. A double by Junior Lake, followed by a groundout and then a sacrifice fly by Ryan Sweeney tied the score. Welington Castillo put the Cubs in front with a two-run home run, his eighth. Gomez tied it up with a homer in the bottom of the seventh and it stayed that way until the ninth.

What it means: The most important part of the game was Jeff Samardzija lasting as long as he did, seven innings. But when handed the first lead of the game, he gave it right back on the long ball to Gomez. Still, it was his most effective outing of his past four as he gave up only five hits and two walks.

Outside the box: Samardzija reached 200 innings and 200 strikeouts one inning apart, accomplishing both for the first time in his career. He's the first Cubs pitcher to accomplish both feats in the same season since Ryan Dempster in 2010.

Up next: Game 3 of the series takes place Wednesday night when Chris Rusin opposes Tyler Thornburg.
