CHICAGO -- The Chicago Cubs re-signed outfielder Ryan Sweeney to a two-year, $3.5 million contract, according to a source familiar with the deal.

Sweeney, 28, hit .266 with six home runs and 19 RBIs in 70 games with the Cubs in 2013 after being signed to a minor-league deal in April.

He was injured after crashing into the wall in a game in late June and placed on the 60-day disabled list but came back in September and finished the season as a part-time starter.

The left-handed Sweeney can play all three outfield positions and is useful as a fourth outfielder.

The deal was first reported by the USA Today.
