LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- Kansas City Royals manager Ned Yost said he waited “about an hour” to offer former Cubs manager Dale Sveum a job on his coaching staff after hearing that Sveum had been fired at the end of last season.

“I know the quality of teacher he is, the quality of coach that he is,” Yost said on Day 1 of the winter meetings. “One of the best coaches that I’ve ever had.”

Sveum was part of Yost’s staff in Milwaukee from 2006-08 when Yost was the manager of the Brewers -- until he was fired that year. He knows what Sveum was up against as a first-time manager with the rebuilding Cubs.

“He was in a tough spot,” Yost said. “I gave it about an hour after I heard he got fired. We’ve got a pretty top-notch major league coaching staff.”

Yost hired Sveum as well as former Seattle Mariners manager Don Wakamatsu and thinks both will be better the next time around.

“It helps a lot,” Yost said. “You learn a lot of lessons. You can sit back and kind of digest everything that happened and figure out what you would do differently.”

Yost figures the Cubs' loss will be the Royals gain. Sveum will coach third base and work with infielders.

“He’s a great baseball man,” Yost said.
