Cubs sign former ROY OF Coghlan

The Chicago Cubs signed former Rookie of the Year outfielder Chris Coghlan Wednesday to a minor-league contract with an invitation to spring training.

Coghlan, 28, won the 2009 National League Rookie of the Year with the then-Florida Marlins when he batted .321 with a .390 on-base percentage. He has been limited by injuries since then, averaging just 66 games played over the past four seasons. The Marlins didn't offer him a contract in December, making him a free agent.

Coghlan joins a crowded outfield with another former Marlin, Justin Ruggiano, acquired in a trade with Miami earlier this offseason, along with Junior Lake, Nate Schierholtz, Ryan Sweeney, Darnell McDonald, Brett Jackson and Matt Szczur.
