Notes: Fever-stricken Silva sent home
Chicago Cubs right-handed pitcher Carlos Silva was sent home from practice Monday after reporting to spring training with a 103-degree fever.
Manager Mike Quade had concerns for both Silva and the rest of the pitchers in camp when he told Silva to take the rest of Monday off.
Quade himself admitted that he made his first mistake of the spring by not telling outfielder Tyler Colvin that he, along with Jeff Baker, will be the backup first basemen for Carlos Pena this season. Quade, when talking to reporters, said he knew he had messed up by not telling Colvin until after practice.
Pitching Mark Riggins had his pitchers throwing in groups of four on Monday. In the previous nine years, former pitching coach Larry Rothschild had his pitchers throwing in groups of six or eight at time during camp’s opening day.
By signing right-handed pitcher Carlos Marmol to a three-year, $20-million deal, Cubs general manager Jim Hendry avoided going to arbitration with any player for the eighth time in his nine years as general manager. Hendry went to an arbitration with shortstop Ryan Theriot in 2010, and the Cubs won that case. From a historically perspective the Cubs have only through the arbitration process twice since 1993, winning their case against Mark Grace that year and against Theriot in 2010.
