MESA, Ariz. -- Chicago Cubs manager Mike Quade is pointing towards March 16, the Cubs’ only day off of the spring, to make his first significant player cuts.

“The GM might have a different say in this,” Quade said. “But we know we need a lot of people until that day.”

After the 16th, the team has two weeks left in spring training before the 25-man roster flies back to Chicago on March 30 to prepare for the season-opener at Wrigley against the Pittsburgh Pirates on April 1.
