Mariners 5, Cubs 3

PEORIA, Ariz. -- A quick look at the Chicago Cubs' 5-3 loss to the Seattle Mariners on Monday at the Peoria Sports Complex.

The good: Matt Garza went four innings, allowing just one run, in his longest, most-effective performance as a Cub. Shortstop Darwin Barney continues to impress. Barney was 2-for-4 against Seattle and is now hitting .333 for the spring. Outfielder Bryan LaHair contributed two RBI doubles.

The bad: Outfielder Kosuke Fukudome takes an 0-for-3 at the plate, dropping his spring average to .194.

Beyond the box score: Minor injuries to shortstop Starlin Castro, outfielder Brett Jackson and infielder Augie Ojeda have Cubs manager Quade looking for help from minor leaguers to fill out his two split-squad rosters on Tuesday.

Up next: Right-hander Randy Wells (1-0) faces Colorado’s Esmil Rogers (0-0) in Mesa, Ariz. while right-hander Andrew Cashner (1-1) faces Oakland’s Brett Anderson (1-1) in Phoenix.
