Barney to start in opener vs. Pirates

The big surprise of spring will be in the Chicago Cubs' Opening Day lineup against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday. Rookie Darwin Barney will start at second base and bat eighth, manager Mike Quade announced on Thursday.

Barney, who played in 30 games with the Cubs as a late-season call-up last season, batted .340 with six RBIs this spring. Blake DeWitt was the favorite to win the starting job at second base against right-handed pitchers with Jeff Baker playing against lefties. DeWitt struggled offensively and defensively this spring but still made the team as a backup infielder.

Here is the rest of Quade's lineup against Pirates starter Kevin Correia:

1. Kosuke Fukudome, RF

4. Aramis Ramirez, 3B

5. Carlos Pena, 1B
