Joe Murphy/NBAE/Getty ImagesJerry Krause's legacy of building champions appealed to the Diamondbacks.Krause was the Chicago Bulls' general manager during their six-title dynasty in the 1990s.
"Jerry Krause knows how to build winners, and we are all about bringing winning people into our organization," Towers said. "He's a good baseball man, too. He's done a lot of great things in baseball, as well as winning those six NBA titles. We are very, very happy to have him as a part of the Diamondbacks family."
Krause will report to Towers and VP of player personnel Jerry DiPoto.
Krause will initially look at high school and college players before the June amateur draft. After that he'll evaluate some of the Diamondbacks' minor league clubs and do other professional scouting.
"I like hiring successful people," Towers said. "I like to find out how they managed people in the past, what type of chemistry they looked for, what were the intangibles in building a championship team.
"Based on Jerry's history, we feel he'll be very valuable to the Diamondbacks. He's got a scout's eye. He's not afraid to put his neck in the noose. He's done that and has been successful."
Krause worked for the White Sox 11 months before leaving the organization. The White Sox are picking up all of Krause's salary for 2011.
