Cubs bring in Ortiz on minor league deal

The Cubs signed veteran lefty Doug Davis today, and also inked Ramon Ortiz to a minor league deal this week. That Ramon Ortiz? Yes.

Ortiz threw only 30 innings for the Dodgers last year, and got torched. He had an ERA of 6.30 and a WHIP of 1.63. He did not pitch at all in 2008 or 2009, and has not posted an ERA under 5.00 since 2004.

The Dodgers waived him at the end of May last year. He was then picked up by the Mets in June. He was quickly released by them and signed again by the Rays in August. He did not make major league appearances for either of those teams.

But now, at age 37, Ortiz gets one more chance with the Cubs due to the injuries of starters Randy Wells and Andrew Cashner.
