Chicago Cubs manager Lou Piniella announced on Monday the rotation to start spring training. In the Cubs' first exhibition game on Thursday, Randy Wells will start. Carlos Zambrano is scheduled for Friday followed by Carlos Silva on Saturday. The Cubs have split squad games on Sunday. Tom Gorzelanny will start one of the games and Jeff Samardzija will start the other. Ryan Dempster will start on Monday.
Although it hasn't been officially announced, Piniella will eventually name Zambrano his Opening Day starter to pitch against the Atlanta Braves on April 5 at Turner Field. The No. 2 start will be Dempster followed by Wells. The fourth and fifth starters will be determined by performance during spring training.
