Chris Humphreys/US PresswireCubs starter Ryan Dempster allowed four runs in the first inning against the Rockies on Sunday.DENVER -- Ryan Dempster's Coors Field experience continued to be a bummer, as the Chicago Cubs' No. 1 starter surrendered four runs in the first inning on Sunday, including a two-run home run by Colorado Rockies right fielder Seth Smith.
Even though Dempster got a no-decision, he blamed himself for the Cubs’ 9-5 loss.
“I’m sick and tired of this,” Dempster said. “I’m better than that. I have to do a better job of giving my team a chance to win. I can do a better job of pitching. I just haven’t done a very good job.”
Coming into Sunday’s game, Dempster was 1-2 with a 6.30 ERA. Lifetime at Coors Field, Dempster had a composite 1-3 record with an 11.33 ERA in five starts.
He left Sunday’s game after five innings, allowing five runs and seven hits.
“It’s getting really old,” Dempster said. “And I’m really tired [of it]. I know the guys over there are pretty good but when you throw the ball right over the plate, you don’t tip your cap to anybody. I pride myself on giving us a chance to win. I’ve pitched five ballgames and given us a chance to win one.”
The Cubs ended the road trip 4-5 after losing two of three to the Rockies this weekend.
“We would have liked to have had a 5-4 trip,” Cubs manager Mike Quade said. “But I still see a lot of good things. We still have a lot of things to clean up though, that’s for sure. As far as effort, and how guys are playing and getting after it, I’m very optimistic that this club will get better.”
In the Cubs’ first 15 games, only one starting pitcher has gone seven innings -- Matt Garza on April 3 against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
