The good: Ryan Dempster threw six solid innings, allowing just one run even thoug he had a right hip strain that almost caused him to abort his start. He struck out eight batters, including Joey Votto, Jay Bruce and Miguel Cairo in the Reds' sixth. He pitched out of a one-out, bases-loaded jam in the first. The Cubs hit back-to-back home runs for the first time since April 29 as Carlos Pena hit his ninth and Aramis Ramirez hit his third. Carlos Marmol threw a perfect ninth inning after imploding in St. Louis and blowing a save with two outs in the ninth on Sunday.
The bad: The Cubs couldn’t score in the fifth despite having a man on third and no outs and their third, fourth and fifth hitters coming up.
Outside the box: Darwin Barney played shortstop for the second time this season. He had a flawless effort in place of the resting Starlin Castro. Outfielder Reed Johnson and utilityman Jeff Baker begin rehab outings on Thursday.
