Kansas City scored a run in the eighth inning to take a 3-2 win over the Cubs on Saturday night.
How it happened: Poor execution by the Cubs cost them in the bottom of the eighth inning. Reliver Jeff Samardzija walked two Royals then uncorked an outside pitch that went off Geovany Soto’s glove for a pass ball. Chris Getz’s one-hopper off Samardja’s glove drove in the winning run. Carlos Zambrano allowed just two runs over seven innings in his second straight strong outing. He got the no-decision. Aramis Ramirez and Soto went back to back, each tallying the sixth homer of the season. Ramirez added another hit and a nifty catch in foul territory on his 33rd birthday.
What it means: For the third consecutive series, the Cubs failed to win the second game after winning the first. The Cubs will look to win the rubber match on Sunday as they have lost six consecutive interleague series dating back to last season.
Outside the box: The Cubs lost their fifth base runner in two games when Reed Johnson was thrown out at home plate in the third inning while trying to score from second on Jeff Baker’s single. Starlin Castro extended his hitting streak to nine games.
