A quick look at the Chicago Cubs' 9-1 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday at PNC Park.

How it happened: Cubs starter Ramon Ortiz struggled early, particularly in the Pirates’ four-run third inning in which Andrew McCutchen hit a three-run homer. Ortiz left after four innings, having given up six runs on seven hits. The Cubs offense struggled to get anything going against Pirates starter Paul Maholm, who went 7 2/3 innings and allowed just one run on four hits while striking out eight. The Cubs’ lone run came in the fourth, when Reed Johnson scored on Aramis Ramirez's fielder’s choice. John Grabow allowed the Pirates three more runs in the eighth.

What it means: The Cubs wrapped up a disappointing first half by falling 18 games under .500. They sit in fifth place.

Outside the box: Starlin Castro will represent the Cubs in Tuesday’s All-Star Game at Chase Park in Phoenix.

What’s next: When the second half of the season gets underway on Thursday, Matt Garza (4-7) will face the Florida Marlins' Anibal Sanchez (6-2) at Wrigley Field.
