Rapid Reaction: Cardinals 13, Cubs 5
ST. LOUIS -- Here's a quick look at the Cubs' blowout loss on Saturday.

How it happened: The Cardinals scored 13 unanswered runs after the Cubs staked starter Rodrigo Lopez a 5-0 first-inning lead. Geovany Soto’s two-run double and Alfonso Soriano’s three-run homer off Kyle Lohse gave the Cubs what appeared to be a comfortable lead. The game blew up in the bottom of the fifth inning as Jeff Samardzija induced a grounder to second that appeared to be an inning-ending double play, but Cardinals baserunner Matt Holiday took out Starlin Castro at second on a questionable leg kick. Two runs then scored with Castro on the ground. Manager Mike Quade was ejected for arguing that Holiday was out of the baseline on the take-out slide. Samardzija walked three , with Ryan Theriot’s two-run double highlighted the eight-run inning. Theriot has gone 6-for-7 in the series.
What it means: The Cubs are now 23 games under .500 for the first time since they were 51-74 in 2010. The North Siders haven’t been 24 games under the mark since finishing the 2006 season 66-96.
Outside the box: The Cubs have now lost 34 games in which they have had a lead, the most in baseball.
