How it happened: The North siders used the long ball to set the tone. Geovany Soto, Reed Johnson and Alfonso Soriano all went deep. Soriano became the third current player to have an active record of at least 20 home runs in 10 consecutive years (Albert Pujols and David Ortiz are the others). Cubs starter Rodrigo Lopez did a serviceable job, giving up just two runs in 5 2/3 innings. The bullpen behind Jeff Samardzija, Sean Marshall and Carlos Marmol took care of the rest. Johnson went 4-for-4 with a homer and three singles. It was his seventh career four-hit game.
What it means: The Cubs now have won eight of their last 10 as they look to take their third straight series on Thursday. Starlin Castro extended his streak to ten games with a single in the first inning.
Outside the box: Ron Santo’s grandson Sam Brown threw out the first pitch to Santo’s friend and favorite player, Kerry Wood. Organist Gary Pressey performed at his 2,000th game.
