Chicago Cubs shortstop Starlin Castro was back in the starting lineup Tuesday, one day after being benched for not paying attention during a play Sunday night against the St. Louis Cardinals.

The incident was captured during ESPN's Sunday Night Baseball and analyzed by color commentator Bobby Valentine.

Since that time, the story has continued to draw national attention.

"[Castro missing a play] shouldn't happen," Cubs third baseman Aramis Ramirez said. "Cassie will be the first one to tell you that. It happens, and remember he's only 21. He's going to make mistakes. We forget how young he is, and like any other 21-year-old you're going to do some things that eventually you'll have to learn from.

"But because it was ESPN and they made a big deal about it, the story got bigger. You have to be ready, though, every pitch. But if it wasn't a nationally televised game, nobody would have known about it."

Castro has been the Cubs' most consistent hitter all season. The second-year shortstop hit .300 as a rookie and entered Tuesday's game hitting .308.

Once error-prone, Castro has made just three errors since the All-Star break, but he still leads the National league in errors with 21.

Quade said that in order to get his point across to Castro, he used third base coach Ivan DeJesus as an interpreter.

"Ivan does a lot of it, but for the specifics if I'm irritated, I don't need an interpreter," Quade said. "The universal language is pretty much understood. But you do want to make sure the message is understood."

Castro has had three incidents of loss of focus since Quade took over from Lou Piniella one year ago Tuesday. He once failed to complete a double play because of a lack of focus, and he once failed to chase down a ground ball that bounced off his glove last season.

"Something like this happens, we deal with it," Quade said, "but I don't want it to cloud all the progress he's made. We won't and I don't.

"Just think when he improves his focus, how good he can be then. For right now, the rest of the work is getting done. But he has to improve on this [focus] again."
