CHICAGO -- Here's a quick look at the Cubs' win on Wednesday night.

How it happened: Alfonso Soriano got the ball rolling for Randy Wells and the Cubs’ offense with his 22nd home run in the second inning. The two-run shot was his second homer in two nights. Randy Wells also pitched in with an RBI ground out in the three-run inning. Wells had one of his best outings of the season, departing in the seventh inning after a long home run by Chipper Jones. Wells’ impressive line: 6 2/3 innings, two hits, one earned run, two walks and six strikeouts. Kerry Wood, pitching in relief, surrendered a home run to Alex Gonzalez to lead off the eighth. Wood was pitching in his third consecutive game.

What it means: The Cubs have a chance to split the four-game series with the Braves with a win Thursday. They have only 13 games left at Wrigley Field on the year.

Outside the box: Andrew Cashner threw an inning at Double-A Tennessee. Manager Mike Quade said Cashner will throw three more times in Double-A before moving up to Iowa. The Cubs hope Cashner will join them the first week of September.

Next: Matt Garza (6-9, 3.62 ERA) faces Brandon Beachy (6-2, 3.32).
