Mr. Cub hit plenty of balls into the stands at Wrigley Field. Now he gets a chance to hit some from the stands.
As a promotion for the BMW Championship to be played Sept. 15-18 at Cog Hill in Lemont, Ernie Banks, PGA pro Dustin Johnson and VIPs will hit golf balls from the stands to a hole on the field, trying to make a hole-in-one. The first one to hit the shot will have a $100,000 scholarship donated in their name to the Evans Scholars Foundation.
A specially designed platform will serve as the tee box.
“I’ve played some great courses and hit some wild shots, but I never thought I’d be hitting balls from the stands of one of the most iconic ballparks in the country,” said Johnson, who won the 2010 BMW Championship.
If after two rounds the players have not holed a ball, BMW will make a $10,000 donation to the scholarship fund in the name of the player who is closest to the pin.
“I’ve played a lot of games in this ballpark, but never anything like this,” said Banks, who had 512 career home runs in a 19-year career. “I’ve always focused on hitting balls out of the park, rather than into it.”
