How it happened: Matt Garza had another solid performance as he picked up his ninth win of the season by going the distance. The Brewers' Nyjer Morgan lost a DJ LeMahieu fly in the sun, allowing two runs to score. Marlon Byrd's three-run home run in the sixth provided some breathing room.
What it means: The Cubs took 2 of 3 from Milwaukee, preventing the Brewers from clinching a playoff spot at Wrigley Field. Their Magic Number remains at three.
Outside the box: Starlin Castro had two hits in his first two at-bats, leaving him one shy of 200 on the season. Castro had said he had hoped to get his 200th hit in front of the home fans. His first-inning double extended his on-base streak to 34 games, tying him with Woody English of the 1929 Cubs for most times getting on base by a Cubs shortstop. Aramis Ramirez's agent told ESPNChicago.com that he told the Cubs they would test the free-agent market after the season. The Cubs finished 39-42 at home.
