CHICAGO -- Theo Epstein scored major points with his new front office on Monday. The Chicago Cubs new president of baseball operations took his staff out to lunch at Vines in Wrigleyville, and according to sources, asked each front office person about them personally and their education, concentrating on where they went to college.
Epstein, who will be introduced to the media on Tuesday, then asked each person to sing their college fight song. After everyone was through with their attempts, Epstein, a Yale graduate, got up on a chair and sang his own, according to sources.
Epstein has been working on his new staff for 10 days to go along with the front office he inherited from former GM Jim Hendry. San Diego Padres GM Jed Hoyer and scouting guru Jason McLeod are expected to join Epstein this week. Both had top jobs with the Red Sox under Epstein and were instrumental in their World Series championships in 2004 and 2007.
A source told ESPNChicago that Epstein will confirm that it was he and his wife who were spotted at the Wrigleyville Starbucks two weeks ago. Noah Pinzur recently told ESPN 1000 he was "99.9 percent sure" it was Epstein he talked to earlier this month at the coffee shop.
