MESA, Ariz. – It was a rough day for Cubs position players Thursday as three of them projected for the 25-man roster had their day cut short.
Third baseman Ian Stewart was an early scratch with a sore right quadriceps muscle. Second baseman Darwin Barney was then scratched just before game time with a strain in his left side. Barney’s slight side discomfort was first felt a few days prior but was aggravated in batting practice Thursday. Both are listed as day to day.
Utility man Blake DeWitt then had what is potentially the worst injury of the three. In a split-squad game at Scottsdale against the Colorado Rockies he was hit by a pitch on the side of his right hand, just below the pinky finger. DeWitt was immediately removed from the game and will be re-evaluated at the club’s spring-training complex in Mesa.
The Cubs were awaiting results on the X-rays as of Thursday evening, but DeWitt told the coaching staff he’s confident it isn’t anything serious.
