The Cubs will make roster cuts over the weekend, but don't expect outfielder Joe Mather to be among them. The former Brave has made a strong statement this spring. He's hitting .421 after a 3-for-3 showing on Thursday that included his third home run of the spring. The Cubs have 47 players remaining in camp. Dale Sveum said he plans to cut between 10-12 players.

• Svem said he has no real concerns about Carlos Marmol's stiff neck. Marmol threw on flat ground Thursday and will be ready to pitch on Monday in a Cactus League game in Mesa.

• Third baseman Ian Stewart hit his first home run of the spring on Thursday, he also made two sparkling defensive plays.
