Jeff Samardzija's hard work has paid off as the right-hander landed the No. 3 spot in the Chicago Cubs' starting rotation.

His six shutout innings on Wednesday may have solidified the move.

"You don’t know how many of these opporutniries you’re going to get to start," Samardzija said. "Once you become a reliever and have success, a lot of times that’s where you end up for your career. I really wanted to give this a full head of steam, a full shot and go from there. I’m excited for the season and I can’t wait."

Samardzija reported to spring training early and was committed to show the Cubs' new front office that he belonged in the rotation.

The former Notre Dame All-American receiver was one of the more effective set-up men in the National League last season.
