MESA, Ariz. -- Kerry Wood will get two more outings this spring before his Opening Day preparations are complete.

Debby Wong/US PresswireKerry Wood has missed much of spring training due to back spasms.

Wood, who got a 12-day break from Cactus League action as a way of preserving the veteran for the upcoming season, is not only on the schedule to pitch Saturday against the Angels, he will also have an outing Monday against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

It was the Diamondbacks that roughed up Wood in his only bad outing of the spring. On March 15, Arizona tagged the right-hander for four runs on four hits in a third of an inning. He actually left the game with the bases loaded and all three of his runners ended up scoring.

Wood returned to action Thursday and got one out, stranding an inherited runner in the process. Manager Dale Sveum said that Wood’s final two outings will be longer than that.

“We have to get him a full two outs or three outs,” Sveum said.

If he goes a full inning in each of his last two outings, that would still leave Wood with just 5 2/3 Cactus League innings. He did get work on the back fields and in bullpen sessions during his absence from game action.
