Cubs manager Lou Piniella has altered his rotation for next week.
Due to the fact that the team has an off-day Monday, RHP Ryan Dempster will go Tuesday, LHP Ted Lilly on Wednesday, RHP Randy Wells on Thursday, LHP Tom Gorzelanny on Friday and RHP Carlos Silva on Saturday.
Before Silva’s start on Saturday, Piniella decided to flip-flop Silva and Gorzelanny next week. Piniella said that Silva’s right wrist had been bothering him, and he will have seven days between starts.
Reliever Esmailin Caridad will continue his rehab in Arizona Saturday, then continue on to Triple-A Iowa where he’ll pitch Tuesday. Piniella said that Caridad will most likely join the team’s bullpen next weekend if there are no setbacks in his rehab.
With the addition of Caridad, the team will have to make a roster move. For now there is no plan to move Carlos Zambrano back to the rotation. One of the young pitchers, either James Russell, Jeff Gray or Justin Berg will go to the minors when Caridad returns.
Keep your eye on the possibility of Zambrano being used as a closer on Sunday. Although nobody with the Cubs would say it, Carlos Marmol has thrown two days in a row and had to be extended to 35 pitches on Saturday to get his save. Other emergency candidates to close would be LHP John Grabow and LHP Sean Marshall.
Cubs opponents have committed an error in 14 of the last 15 games the team has played in.
The Cubs finished April with an 11-13 mark. They were 10-11 in April 2009.
The Northsiders are 11-4 when scoring four runs or more in a game and 1-9 when scoring less than four.
Shortstop Ryan Theriot extended his hitting streak to 11 games with his third-inning single Saturday.
