CHICAGO -- Relievers Lendy Castillo and Scott Maine figure to have a restless night ahead until they find out who is the odd man out on the Chicago Cubs roster.

The Cubs acquired right-handed reliever Michael Bowden from the Boston Red Sox on Saturday in the deal that sent Marlon Byrd to Boston. With the right-handed Bowden joining the roster Monday, somebody in the bullpen has to go.

Castillo’s ace in the hole is that the Rule 5 selection has to be offered back to his former club, the Philadelphia Phillies, at half his $50,000 claiming price before he can be sent down to the minor leagues. Either that or the Cubs work out a side deal with the Phillies to keep the right-hander and then send him down.

But Castillo has a 7.94 ERA and four walks in 5 2/3 innings, while only being used in mop-up situations so his first stint in the major leagues has been a rocky one.

Maine’s ally is the fact that he is left-handed and if he is sent back down it would get the Cubs bullpen back to one left-hander in James Russell. He was recalled Friday when Kerry Wood went on the disabled list.

Bowden hasn’t pitched since he was designated for assignment by the Red Sox on April 15. He gave up one run over three innings in two relief outings for the Red Sox this season.
