Cubs target Thursday return for Kerry Wood

PHILADELPHIA -- The Chicago Cubs plan on getting Kerry Wood into a simulated game Monday and could activate him to the active roster by the end of the current road trip.

First things first, though. Wood threw a 25-pitch bullpen session Friday in Philadelphia and will need to come out of that feeling fine Saturday before the rest of his recovery schedule is put into place.

“He threw all his pitches, spun the ball really well and everything went good,” manager Dale Sveum said.

Wood hasn’t pitched since April 13, officially going on the disabled list April 20 with shoulder discomfort. He received a cortisone shot before going on the DL that failed to speed up the healing process.

The right-hander has a history of arm ailments, with this particular issue bothering him since spring training. Wood pitched in less than five innings during Cactus League play.

In four appearances (2 1/3 innings) during the regular season, Wood was 0-1 with an 11.57 ERA.

Wood is officially eligible to come off the disabled list Sunday.
