CINCINNATI -- The Chicago Cubs' first game to be postponed this season won’t have an affect on all the pitchers in the current series against the Cincinnati Reds.

Jeff Samardzija, who was scheduled to pitch Tuesday’s series opener, will now be moved to Wednesday night’s game. But Paul Maholm, who was originally scheduled to pitch Wednesday will be moved out of the series entirely.

Only Ryan Dempster will keep his scheduled day to pitch. The right-hander was scheduled to come off the disabled list Thursday against the Reds and manager Dale Sveum said he would keep it that way.

Samardzija, who has already gone a week since his last start, will have to wait one more day. It’s not exactly the ideal scenario.

“He had plenty of rest so I don’t know if this is a bonus or not,” Sveum said. “You can’t give him too much rest. These guys need to throw. It’s OK to give Maholm a rest, actually. That helps him out too.”

Maholm will now start Friday in the opener of a three-game series at Wrigley Field against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

By not playing Tuesday, the Cubs’ bullpen was a benefactor. Rafael Dolis, who has been worked heavily of late, was not going to pitch Tuesday. Neither was left-hander Scott Maine, who is under the weather for the second time on the road trip.

A rested bullpen would likely eliminate the need for Randy Wells to be used in relief before Thursday. Dempster is likely to replace Wells on the active roster.
