Cubs close to activating Lendy Castillo

By Doug Padilla

CHICAGO -- The Chicago Cubs are expected to activate right-handed reliever Lendy Castillo from the disabled list on Saturday.

Castillo, who was in the Cubs clubhouse Friday and was set to be examined by team doctors, hasn’t pitched since May 11 because of a left groin strain. He just completed a 30-day minor-league rehab assignment.

Obtained in the Rule 5 draft this past winter from the Philadelphia Phillies, Castillo has to be on the major-league roster the full season or be offered back to his former club. The DL stint and long rehab certainly helped the Cubs bridge the gap to get toward the back end of the season.

Castillo, who had never pitched above the Single-A level before this season, had a 7.04 ERA in seven outings, while opponent batted .323 against him. Although he factored into the decision just once, the Cubs lost all seven games Castillo appeared in this year.

A corresponding move is not yet known. Left-hander Jeff Beliveau or right-hander Alberto Cabrera are possibilities to be sent down.
